A Catholic university in Pennsylvania has cancelled the campus visit of a popular columnist for a prestigious lecture after The Cardinal Newman Society (CNS) reported that the pending speaker has been a very public proponent for abortion rights. According to the Saint Francis University website last week, writer Ellen Goodman was set to deliver the "25th Furlong Lecture" in October. The news webpage announcing this event is now missing. Gonzaga Univ. Magazine Features Lesbian Rabbi Teaching in Religious Studies Dept. An article in Gonzaga Magazine highlights the career of a lesbian professor in Catholic, Jesuit Gonzaga University's religious studies department. According to the magazine, Elizabeth Goldstein is Gonzaga's "first and only female rabbi". From the article: "There is this intersection of religion and culture that keeps gays and lesbians from fully participating." Read more... St. Joseph College (CT) Touts Honor for President Alongside Planned Parenthood Leader Saint Joseph College in Connecticut is publicizing the fact that its president, Dr. Pamela Trotman Reid, will be honored by the Connecticut Women's Education and Legal Fund (CWELF) alongside the President of Planned Parenthood of Southern New England. Cardinal Wuerl: Magisterium 'Authenticates the Fruit of Theology' In an article for America Magazine, Cardinal Donald Wuerl discusses the essential relationship that theologians have to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church. Conference Series on Homosexuality Began at Fordham University Last Week Earlier this month, The Cardinal Newman Society wrote to Fordham University organizers of a conference aiming "to change the conversation about sexual diversity and the Catholic Church" and urged them to ensure the authentic presentation of Church teachings. Although another organizer said the conference will not challenge Church teaching, we are wondering why he also said that it is inspired by "a shift in American society...which has led to the legalization of same sex marriage." 'Applying the Fruits of the Extraordinary Rite to Family Life' at Thomas Aquinas College Earlier this month, Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, California, hosted a one day conference titled "Applying the Fruits of the Extraordinary Rite to Family Life," sponsored by Una Voce Ventura. The blog Rorate Caeli has this about the event: "Dr. Thomas Kaiser, who is a philosophy professor at Thomas Aquinas College talked about how the Church has used sensory experience to lead us into the sacred spiritual world, which cannot be perceived by the senses." Catholic College President Defends Employing Instructor Who Touted Work as 'Abortion Doula' Over the past few months, we have been posting updates to the story about College of Mount Saint Vincent and one of its adjunct sociology instructors, Bianca Laureano. This College employee has on several occasions publicly espoused positions opposed to Catholic moral teachings on the websites of pro-abortion organizations. An alumna of the College recently notified The Cardinal Newman Society about a letter she received — addressed to alumni, students, parents and others — by College president Charles Flynn, in which he defends the decision to keep employing Laureano. Catholic University of America Lawyers Defend Decision to Implement Single-Sex Dorms The Tower reports that Catholic University of America's (CUA) law representatives defended reasons for the switch to single-sex dorms at a closed-door meeting at the D.C. Office of Human Rights last week. In June, CUA President John Garvey wrote an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal in which he announced the University would be returning to the policy of single-sex dorms on campus to combat problems of binge drinking and "hook-ups". Roman Missal Changes Protest Led to New Priests Group, St. Leo's Hosting Conference The National Catholic Reporter reports that the new group Association of U.S. Catholic Priests will hold a major convocation at Catholic St. Leo University in Florida next year on the liturgy. NCR also reports that the new priests group was created in part due to the protests of "the coming changes in the Roman Missal." Read more... College Degrees Confirmed as 'Paths to Better Jobs and Higher Earnings' Daily Finance reports on the findings of a Census Bureau study proving that a bachelor's degree is worth the money required to obtain it. From the report: "According to the study, education levels had more effect on earnings over a 40-year span in the workforce than any other demographic factor such as race or gender." Read more... CNS Urges Hundreds of Thousands to Oppose Obama Admin's Mandate Assaulting Religious Freedom The Cardinal Newman Society (CNS) urged hundreds of thousands of supporters to submit comments to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in protest of new healthcare regulations which violate religious freedoms, forcing many Catholic institutions, including colleges and universities, to violate their Catholic identity by providing health benefits for sterilization and contraception, including those that may cause abortion.
